Is Kavanah Pouch a Faraday pouch?
Yes. Kavanah Pouch works on the same principle as a Faraday bag: when sealed, it blocks the wireless signals your phone uses to connect — cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Calls, texts, and app notifications can't reach the phone while it's inside. When you take it out, the phone reconnects on its own, and messages that came in while you were davening usually arrive then.
The difference is what it's designed for. Most Faraday bags are sold for privacy or travel. Kavanah Pouch is sized, shaped, and explained for the few minutes that matter most: davening, a shiur, a seder, or learning with a chavrusa.
How to seal it so it actually blocks signal
The pouch is intentionally roomy so it fits phones up to 7.2″. That means how you close it matters:
- Slide the phone all the way to the bottom. A phone resting near the opening is the most common reason a call gets through.
- Close the Velcro flap.
- Press along the strip just below the rounded top until you feel the two magnets snap together. That magnetic strip is what forms the signal-blocking seal.
Why not just turn the phone off, or use silent mode?
If you turn your phone off every time you daven, you may not need a pouch. Most people don't do it consistently. Silent mode still lets the phone buzz, light up, and pull at your attention. Airplane mode has to be switched on and back off every time, and it's easy to forget.
A pouch replaces all of that with one physical habit: phone in, seal it, daven. Nothing to change and nothing to restore afterward.
Will it drain my battery?
For normal use during davening, no meaningful drain is expected. A phone with no signal may search for service now and then, and that varies by phone. In our own simple test, an iPhone at 100% spent 50 minutes sealed in the pouch and the battery reading didn't drop.
Will I still hear my alarm?
Alarms and timers run on the phone itself, not the network, so they still go off inside the pouch.
